Sometimes, we find ourselves in cities quite unexpectedly—often for work, and rarely with a plan to explore. Vijayawada, in Andhra Pradesh, was one such city for me. A vital railway junction and a buzzing hub of business and trade, it’s a place that sees thousands pass through every day.
Decades ago, when I frequently travelled by train to my posting in West Bengal, Vijayawada was a routine halt. The train would stop there for a while—long enough for me to step out and make an STD call to my mother. “I’m in Vijayawada—safe and sound,” I’d say. We didn’t have mobile phones then, and though the call felt like a mere formality, it always brought her comfort. It became a little ritual, etched in memory, even if I never ventured beyond the platform.
As for exploring the city? That plan stayed on the back burner for years. But some journeys take their own sweet time to unfold—and finally, I made it beyond the station walls. This itinerary is my way of revisiting Vijayawada—not as a passerby, but as a curious traveller.
While Vijayawada itself offers enough to keep a traveler engaged for an entire day, this itinerary is designed with a slightly different intent—to step beyond the city limits and uncover some of the lesser-known gems that lie in its vicinity. It’s a journey that takes you through a fascinating mix of heritage, craftsmanship, spirituality, and engineering marvels.
From a serene temple steeped in local legends, to a vibrant handloom weavers’ colony where tradition threads its way into every fabric; from ancient Jain caves whispering stories of a forgotten past, to a grand barrage—an architectural feat that commands both admiration and awe—each stop is carefully chosen to offer a slice of Andhra beyond the obvious.
It’s a full day’s trail, sure to keep you on your toes and fill your senses, before you return to the city, weary but enriched, ready to wind down for the night in Vijayawada.
