Amarkantak Itinerary
Onward Journey - 45
Dear Travel Lovers,
Have you ever wondered what it feels like to stand at the very birthplace of a river? Not just one, but three sacred rivers? In this newsletter, I bring you a thoughtfully curated one-day itinerary to explore Amarkantak — a spiritually rich and naturally serene town tucked into the Maikal Hills of Madhya Pradesh.
Often referred to as the "Teerthraj" or King of Pilgrimage Sites, Amarkantak holds a special place in India’s spiritual geography. It’s here that the mighty Narmada, gentle Son, and the lesser-known yet revered Johilla River emerge from the earth and begin their journey across the heart of the country.
The best part? Almost all the major sites are located along the Amarkantak Main Road, which means it’s entirely possible to immerse yourself in this divine destination in just one well-planned day.

This itinerary isn’t just for the pilgrims or temple-goers — it’s also for heritage enthusiasts, nature lovers, and anyone seeking a peaceful reset in the lap of sacred hills. Whether you're planning your first visit or simply keeping this in your travel bookmarks, I promise this short, crisp route will make your time in Amarkantak deeply fulfilling.
One Day Itinerary in Amarkantak – Where the mighty River Narmada Begins
Amarkantak – the sacred land where the Narmada, Son, and Johila rivers originate. This serene hill station is nestled in the Maikal ranges. A spiritual gem, this quiet town blends nature’s beauty with ancient temples and vibrant mythology. A perfect destination that will satiate your spiritual quest and love for history all in nature’s lap. This itinerary of Amarkantak offers you a peaceful, enriching escape — all in a day.
6.30 AM – Spiritual Hub: Narmada Kund and Amarkantak Temple Complex
Best to start the day at this is heart of Amarkantak. I had first visited the Narmada Kund, which is the origin point of the holy Narmada River — revered as a goddess. Walk around the sacred kund and explore the Amarkantak Temple Complex, including temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, Maa Narmada, Kartikeya, and more. There are several small shrines here, all maintained well.
Taking a dip in the kund is considered highly auspicious.
Time: 1.5 hours
Tip: Carry a water bottle and wear comfortable footwear – temple hopping here involves walking!

8 AM to 8.30 AM
Have breakfast. There are restaurants near the temple complex.
9 AM – Jaleshwar Dham
Head to Jaleshwar Dham, located about 14 km from Amarkantak town. This Shiva temple is located in a mini forest. It is believed to be a place where Lord Shiva resides as Jaleshwar Mahadev. (likely chances to lose track of time here.)
Time: 1 hour
Drive back to town (approx. 30 minutes)
10.30 AM – Explore the Ancient Kalachuri Temples
Visit the Kalachuri Group of Temples, constructed between 1042–1072 AD during the reign of Kalachuri king Karnadeva. These temples are architecturally significant and still exude old-world charm, with delicate carvings and peaceful surroundings. A must-visit for heritage lovers.
Time: 1 hour
12 PM – Shri Yantra Mandir
A lesser-known spiritual gem, the Shri Yantra Mandir is built on sacred geometrical principles. It’s a meditative space with symbolic energy, attracting those seeking balance and spiritual healing.
The temple is aligned with the powerful Shri Yantra – the symbol of divine feminine energy.
Time: 30–45 minutes
1 PM – Lunch Break
Head to a local dhaba or guesthouse restaurant. Many places serve simple satvik meals. Try local dishes like dal-chawal, sabzi, and poha if available.
Time: 1 hour
2.30 PM – Visit Sonakshi Shaktipeeth Temple
Dedicated to Goddess Sonakshi Devi, this is believed to be one of the 51 Shaktipeeths.
It is steeped in legends and exudes a calm, powerful energy. Ideal for quiet prayer and reflection.
Devotees believe that wishes made here with devotion are fulfilled.
Time: 45 minutes
